The Australian Standard on Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems – AS 4801 has Australia wide recognition, by both major corporations, and government. AS 4801 therefore provides an ideal mechanism for independent, third party, audit.
As the name
implies, the desk top audit is focused on identifying the existing
OHS systems and procedures that are in place, without verifying the
implementation of those system.
There is no formal inspection or verification of
documentation, however it is usual to conduct a walkthrough
inspection at the start of the process, to acquaint the auditor with
the scope of the organisation’s operations.
Such an audit
can be conducted in hours rather than days, because it is restricted
to interview and documentation review.
Desktop audits
can often provide the starting point for establishing OHS programme
requirements, including the need for a more rigorous audit.
A Desktop audit can often answer the question “Where do we
start?” and can suit the needs of a smaller organisation.
