CHRIS JONES RISK MANAGEMENT

OH&S Induction Training for the Construction Industry

Chris Jones is accredited (accreditation number 00320) to conduct the Occupational Health and Safety Induction Training Course for Construction Work in New South Wales.  This course is often referred to as the Green Card.

Can you run the course for our company, inhouse?

Yes.  We can conduct the green card course in-house, for up to twenty participants.  We can provide all the necessary equipment and handouts.

Our fees to conduct the course on your premises, or a training venue you provide are:

$800 plus $40 per head, plus 10% GST.

This fee includes payment of the $20 per head administrative fee to WorkCover.

What are the proof of identity requirement?

WorkCover has established strict requirements for proof of identity for participants.  Click here for details.

Do you run public courses?

No.  However there are many providers who do provide this training direct to the public if you only have a few staff who need to complete the course.

Who needs to do the course?

The New South Wales OH&S Regulation 2001 specifies that all employees and self employed persons engaged in construction work must undertake a general OH&S induction course.

There are, however, exemptions.  Clause 221 of the Regulation states that any person who has carried out construction work in the course of employment for any period within the period of 2 years immediately preceding 1 April 1999 is taken to have undergone the general induction course.

What are the contents of the course?

The course runs for 5 hours (plus breaks) and covers the following topics:

OH&S legislation in NSW
Communication and consultation in OH&S
Implementing Health and Safety for construction work
Workplace emergencies and first aid for construction work
Workplace injury management and workers compensation in NSW

How many people can attend the course?

WorkCover restrict the class size to twenty (20) to ensure that there is adequate participation.

Is there an exam?

Yes.  The trainer must make an assessment of the participants to ensure that they adequately understand the material being delivered.  There is a simple multiple choice questionnaire which must be successfully completed.  A trainer who fails to undertake the assessment process risks losing accreditation.  Unsuccessful trainees can appeal the decision, and a second test can be undertaken.  If necessary, WorkCover can be asked to adjudicate.

What about employees who can't speak English, or who are illiterate?

The course can be conducted through an interpreter and the assessment can be conducted orally.  In the interests of the participant's health and safety, however, we would have to be assured that they really understood the training.

I've been told that I have to get a new card.  Do I have to do the course again?

Certificates and wallet cards are now issued only by WorkCover.  Trainers are responsible for ensuring course participants complete a detailed application form.  This documentation is then sent to WorkCover.  WorkCover sends the new card to the individual.  From 1 September 2006, this will be the only acceptable proof of completing the OHS general induction course for construction work.

Prior to 31 March 2006 those who had already completed the course could obtain the new card from WorkCover.   If however, you have not changed to the new card by 31 March 2006, you will have to re-do the course.

Is any other induction training required?

Yes.  The NSW regulations and the Code of Practice: Occupational health and safety induction training for construction specify three types of training:

(a) general health and safety induction training (this course)

(b) work activity based health and safety induction training that relates to the particular type of construction work to be carried out,

(c) site specific health and safety induction training that relates to the particular site at which the construction work is to be carried out.

Can Chris Jones Risk Management help develop the other types of induction training?

Yes.  As a holder of a certificate IV in training and assessment we are competent to develop and conduct induction training in accordance with the Code of Practice.  We can design and train your supervisors in conducting site induction training and work activity OHS training.
